Almanac Sports Editor

BP DAY

Bethel Park Community Day will be held Sept. 9. Activities begin with a parade at 9 a.m. The parade starts at the municipal building and heads down Broad Street before moving into the high school campus where festivities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over 60 vendor booths will provide games, fundraising, refreshments and information.

GOLF OUTING

The Bower Hill VFD golf outing will be held Sept. 24 at the Club at Shadow Lake. Fee is $110 per person and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, dinner, awards and prizes. Registration and putting contest start at 8 a.m. Golf begins with a shotgun start at 8:30. Call 412-303-1151 for more information.

PT REC

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department is offering the following:

Chess For Kids from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays beginning Sept. 8. Ages 5 to 11 are eligible. The Knight School provides instruction. Free pizza is provided each week. Fee is $200 ($300 nonmembers).

Leaf Lantern making from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Sept. 20. Ages 7 to 11 pick leaves in Peterswood Park to make a one-of-a-kind lantern to display at him. Fee is $5 ($8 nonmembers).

Paper Book Pumpkins will be created from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for ages 21 and over at Shelter A in Rolling Hills Park. Bring snacks and any old books. Fee is $10 ($15 nonmembers). Sign-up deadline is Sept. 15.

PICKLEBALL

An introduction to pickleball program will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays beginning Sept. 29 and from 2 to 3 p.m. Sundays beginning Sept. 24 at the Peters Township Tennis Center, located at 610 East McMurray Road. Mt. Lebanon is also offering free pickleball clinics from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 6 and 13, and from 9 to 10 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. BOOK SALE

The Friends of the Community Library of Castle Shannon will hold a fall book sale Sept. 14 to 16 in the lower level community room at 3677 Myrtle Ave. The hours are 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Saturday will also be Bag Day where you can fill a bag with books for only $5.

FOOD HELPERS

Truck-to-trunk-to-table will hold a cooking demonstration during normal pickup hours from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 11 at Thomas Presbyterian Church, located at 1068 Linden Road in Eighty Four. Chef Anthony from Don’s Appliances and dietician Laura Zrvos will conduct a cookout and answer food and nutrition questions. ART FESTIVAL

Mt. Lebanon's annual juried arts festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in the Academy lot, located on Academy Avenue behind The Saloon and Rollier's Hardware. The artist's market, sponsored by the Mt. Lebanon Partnership, will include 60 to 80 booths featuring professional quality original art in a variety of media. The free event will also offer food and entertainment.

ADOPT A PET

The Creatures of The Creator (COTC) Pet Ministry of Unity Presbyterian Church will host Animal Adoption Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 30 in the parking lot and indoors at 1146 Greentree Road. Angel Ridge Animal Rescue, Animal Advocates, Cats N’At, 4 Walls Fosters, Furkins Rescue, The Great Pyrenees Club of Western Pennsylvania Rescue, People’s Animal Care & Rescue and Wishbone Pet Care/Animal Sanctuary will be among the organizations supplying healthy, adoptable pets to the rain-or-shine event. BIKE TOUR

Tour the Montour will be held Sept. 23. The event offers cycling events ranging in distances from 10 miles to a century (62 miles) on the Montour Trail beginning at Mile Zero in Coraopolis. There are four rest/snack/water stops along the way as well as a safety patrol. A post-ride lunch is included at the Forest Grove Sportsmen Club, which is at about mile marker 1.5 on the trail. DORMONT VFW

MEMBER SEARCH

GIANT OAKS

WHOLE FOOD

Dr. Areti Fistoris NP, Naomi Herman, and Terri West will speak while Leigh Garbo-Minniefield will lead a chair yoga and meditation practice. Topics such as protein, cost, allergies, taste, and family situations will be addressed.

SF CARNVIAL

South Fayette’s Homecoming Carnival will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at the high school stadium. The event is for all ages and is sponsored by the high school Student Government Association. Activities include bounce house, giant slide, dunk tank, and game. Food trucks will be available to provide dinner and dessert. The Little Green Machine marching band performs at 8. Admission is free.

SWRNC

The Southwestern Registered Nurses Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at Hamilton Presbyterian Church, 4500 Hamilton Road in Bethel Park. Dr. Joseph Malone, MD, assistant professor of Neuro-Cognitve Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh, will speak about “The AHEAD Study-Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical Trial.” All registered nurses can attend.

BIKE RIDE

The Tour the Montour will be held Sept. 23. The fundraising bicycle event offers 10-, 20- or 40-mile rides on the Montour Trail. Starting point is mile zero in Coraopolis. ELKS COLLECTION

The South Hills Elks 2213, 2789 South Park Rd. in Bethel Park, are collecting items for welcome home kits for veterans. Items needed include: dishes, pots, pans, kitchenware, oven mitts, baking sheets, towel, toiletries, including toothpaste, shampoo and soap, shower liners and rings, toilet paper and paper towels, coffeemakers, toasters, light bulbs, trash casn and bags, dish soap and all-purpose cleaner, brooms, mops, bucket, sponge, laundry baskets and detergent, microwaves, pillows, blankets and queen-size bedding.
